BlackRock Visual Identity System

Designed around BlackRock’s new purpose, to help more and more people experience financial well-being. Relied on this principle to reimagine how to interact with each other, our clients, and the community.

As a designer, there were two overarching challenges for me to solve. The first was to express the new purpose in a differentiated, impactful way while maintaining trust in the brand. The second was to design a system that would endure for the long-term. The new VIS would need to resonate globally and act as a foundation for the rest of the BlackRock family, including iShares and Aladdin. I was responsible for designing the iconography system, theme illustration, and developing the editorial template.

Illustration

The illustration style differentiates us in an otherwise bland category. Collaborated with the global team, I was responsible for research, conception, creation, and presentation.

Data visualization and layout

Data Vis in finance offers the benefit of quick and easy communication of complex concepts. To align with the rest of the Visual Identity System, I was responsible for creating the weekly commentary posts and documentation and using clear and bold shapes with readable type sizes to aid communications.

Impact

  • Increase the audience who notice our brand, and engage with it more deeply.

  • Create an emotional engagement with them, which is more likely to be a long-lasting relationship.

  • Ultimately increases the chance of investing with us.

I work as part of a large multi-disciplinary team, brand strategists, executive officers, compliance, and outside agencies. I collaborate constantly with our stakeholders and regularly present the future direction of design to people at high levels in the company. Making sure we have broad alignment and shared goals is key in a very ambiguous space.
